Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, June 14 (Reporter Zhang Mengran) Why can some people stay healthy all their lives? A study published on the 13th in Nature Communications suggests that immune resilience, the ability to maintain or restore immune function, may be related to the ability to respond to infectious and inflammatory diseases. This is a conclusion drawn from investigating the background of multiple infectious and inflammatory diseases, which may improve people's understanding of immunity and health.
Why some people have longer lifespans and are less susceptible to infectious and inflammatory diseases is a question that has not been fully understood. Infections and inflammatory diseases lead to changes in the immune system, and the magnitude and quality of disease response may vary from person to person. Some people believe that the optimal response to infectious and inflammatory diseases is related to life expectancy, but further research is needed.
The San Antonio Health Science Center at the University of Texas in the United States investigated a series of data based on human and animal studies to estimate immune resilience in various scenarios. They investigated over 48500 individuals and various animal models and found that some individuals were able to maintain immune recovery during exposure to different infectious and inflammatory diseases, as well as during the aging process. The existence of immune resilience in infectious or inflammatory diseases is related to life extension and favorable health outcomes of a series of diseases involved in the study, including AIDS, symptomatic influenza infection, COVID-19 infection, sepsis and recurrent skin cancer. This study also suggests that optimal immune resilience can be detected at all ages, may be more common in women, and may be associated with favorable immune dependent health outcomes.
Researchers believe that immune resilience can be used for monitoring in the future and may provide information for prognosis and management of health outcomes, including longevity and infection response. However, further research is needed to determine the effectiveness and use of measuring immune resilience for diagnosis, prediction and management of inflammatory and infectious diseases.
