The speed of development in network communication technology is crucial for human civilization, as faster internet speeds often translate to a more convenient society and higher penetration rates for smart devices. The US and Western countries have always sought to maintain their dominance in network technology, but now China has taken the lead. Although Elon Musk's Starlink project has made some breakthroughs, it is no longer feasible for the US to control technological advantages in the 6G era: foreign media reports say their "curveball" dream is shattered.
China's Advantage in the 5G Era
China's overtaking of Western nations in network information technology is not a recent development. As early as the emergence of 5G, China had already demonstrated its dominance. Huawei's launch of its own 5G equipment caused a media sensation, and subsequently, the US and Western countries felt threatened and began targeting Chinese tech companies, led by Huawei. To hinder the proliferation of Huawei's 5G equipment, the US and Western countries, under the guise of national security, banned the use of Huawei's 5G equipment in their domestic communication network construction and even demanded that countries already using Huawei's 5G equipment dismantle them. However, these measures have not had a significant impact.
According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, by the end of 2022, Huawei held 14.59% of the total number of 5G patents globally. Huawei's 5G equipment penetration rate is also very high, with a considerable number of 5G base stations in China using Huawei's equipment. Based on this vast Chinese market, Huawei's technological development speed has not slowed down.
Currently, China's 5G penetration rate leads the world. According to official website announcements, as of February this year, China's total number of 5G base stations has exceeded 3.5 million, and the total number of users using the 5G network nationwide has reached 850 million, with a market share firmly holding the top spot globally.
Meanwhile, China's 6G technology has also made rapid progress. Recently, China announced that it has built a 6G experimental network. Domestically, there has also been good news, such as ZTE Corporation explicitly stating that they are working on phone-to-satellite direct connection, broadband satellite services, and key 6G technologies, and will achieve breakthroughs in the near future.
Currently, China holds a relatively large number of 6G patents, and it is highly likely to take the lead in setting 6G technology standards. We are now on the cusp of 6G standard setting, and soon, global communication companies will submit their technological proposals to 3GPP. The main organizations responsible for setting 6G standards will evaluate and test these proposals to ultimately form a new network technology standard recognized by all countries. Then, companies around the world will develop according to this standard.
The US Attempts to Break Through with Satellites
In the 5G era, the US and Western countries have already realized the seriousness of the situation. Competing with China solely with the strength of a single nation is difficult, so they have formulated several contingency plans. For example, the US has formed a ten-nation alliance with the UK, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, and other Western countries or pro-US countries, hoping to compete with China in the 6G field through collaborative research and development. Earlier, Japan also publicly claimed that they have made some key breakthroughs in their 6G technology, but they still face some difficulties in competing with China.
However, collaborative research and development by the US and Western countries may result in lagging behind, as each country has different interests. Achieving unity and exchanging technologies is not easy. Therefore, the US has come up with a "curveball" solution, namely, the Starlink project, which has been long promoted by Elon Musk's SpaceX.
The current Starlink satellite has a core service: using satellites as signal relays, gradually replacing terrestrial base stations. Objectively, if Musk's Starlink system achieves a crucial breakthrough in this area, it will be a revolutionary development.
Traditionally, human mobile devices, whether phones, tablets, or other devices, require communication base stations to relay signals. In other words, communication base stations are the foundation of the network. Without effective communication base stations, even with faster internet speeds, it would be meaningless. However, this raises a new problem: network communication companies need to pay for building communication base stations. Therefore, they usually choose to build base stations in densely populated areas to reduce costs and increase revenue. Unpopulated areas will not have base stations.
Hence, the current human network is mainly limited to the surrounding areas of cities, and many places do not even have a network, such as deep mountains or when sailing at sea. The only way to communicate is through satellites.
Elon Musk's Starlink satellite terminal can perfectly solve this problem, as satellites are in space. In theory, as long as there are enough satellites, they can cover the entire Earth. One can connect to the internet from anywhere. Therefore, the Starlink satellite terminal system has always been one of the most important projects for Musk's company.
After a long period of effort, Musk's company's Starlink communication terminal system has become a complete system. The entire Starlink project is expected to launch over 40,000 satellites, and it has already launched nearly 6,600 satellites. Therefore, the Starlink system can provide real-time satellite network services in localized areas. Musk previously proudly announced that Starlink's global user base has exceeded 3 million, successfully opening up markets in over 100 countries. The science fiction scenario of using phones to connect directly to the internet via satellites has been partially realized.
If they can establish an aerial satellite communication system first, then when 6G technology emerges, it will undoubtedly be the first to be popularized on these satellite terminals. This will help the US and Western countries to seize the standard-setting rights.
China also has a Counter-Plan
However, the US and Western countries did not expect that China would also quickly formulate a targeted plan.
According to official announcements from our country, in response to the US's Starlink communication terminal system, China has also launched its own counter-plan, such as the GW constellation plan, the Hongyan constellation plan, and the recently officially announced Qianfan constellation plan.
According to media reports, through these plans, we will launch 14,000 satellites into space. These satellites will play the same role as the Starlink satellite terminal, providing satellite communication network services. Moreover, the construction speed of China's new satellite navigation system may be faster, primarily because China's current aerospace technology is more advanced, enabling us to steadily and continuously launch satellites into outer space.
On August 6th, the first batch of 18 commercial networking satellites for China's Qianfan constellation plan was launched into space. Once China's Qianfan constellation plan is gradually completed, China will also have a new network relay communication system. When that happens, how will the US and Western countries compete with China?
Therefore, overseas media have stated directly that Europe and the US have been completely defeated.
China's Strategic Layout in Future Network Technology Development
China will spare no effort in developing satellite communication systems, satellite navigation systems, and achieving a leading position in network technology because these are critical infrastructure related to the future national economy and people's livelihood. Almost everyone in our daily lives uses the network. Moreover, future intelligent devices and modern equipment will inevitably be connected to networks, so it is worth investing more resources in this area.
We believe that China will surely achieve more technological breakthroughs in these areas in the future. We also hope that the construction speed of China's satellite communication network can be further accelerated. Currently, Musk's Starlink system is ahead and has started providing services. If China wants to catch up, it must launch more small communication satellites at a faster pace and quickly seize the market at a lower cost.
China's current advantage lies in its more concentrated resources. However, in a strict sense, the US and Western countries have a greater number of scientific research resources. However, they cannot achieve complete resource concentration. Even between companies like Ericsson and Nokia abroad, there is competition. In addition, the influence of Western governments on companies is inherently low. This is China's opportunity to "overtake on a curve".
Therefore, we must never underestimate these foreign companies. Traditional communication companies like Nokia still have advanced technology, and now there are emerging powerful companies like SpaceX. Western countries have never given up on maintaining their technological advantages. Therefore, we must not become complacent just because we have achieved some results now. Therefore, even if we have to tighten our belts, we must develop technology, especially communication technology and network technology, which are key areas that need to be prioritized.
