Science and Technology Daily News (Reporter Zhang Jiaxin) When people can still see meteors, make a wish as soon as possible. According to the Guardian on May 27, scientists warned that humans may not be able to see the night sky 20 years later due to the intensification of light pollution.
Martin Rees, a British royal astronomer, said that in the past few years, light pollution has deteriorated rapidly. Since 2016, astronomers reported that one third of mankind can no longer see the Milky Way. Light emitting diodes and other forms of lighting are illuminating the night sky at an astonishing speed. Research by Christopher Kiba of the German Earth Science Center shows that light pollution is causing the night sky to brighten at about 10% a year.
In addition to the impact on astronomy, light pollution has also caused serious ecological consequences. Turtles and migratory birds are guided by the moonlight, and light pollution makes them lose their way. Insects are the main source of food for birds and other animals, and they are attracted by artificial lights and gather around them until they are exhausted.
Researchers say that previous generations often saw sparkling cosmic scenes, but this is now very rare for people today. He added that significant changes can be made by simply changing the lighting, such as ensuring that outdoor lights point downwards rather than towards the sky, and limiting their brightness, especially red and orange light.
